Letter : 1785 Feb. 22 : Belle Chasse [to] Thomas Holcroft, London.

Letter from Madame de Genlis to Thomas Holcroft, the English translator of her novel Les veillées du château, published in 1785 in English as Tales of the castle: or, stories of instruction and delight. This letter is in response to his sending her a copy of the English novel as well as an associated letter from him. Though de Genlis expresses pleasure with the translation and with the book, she also discusses her surprise at Holcroft's deletions and alterations in several sections of the novel, something he explains to the reader in his introduction. She also tells him about her work on a new volume of writing, which she would like to send him as a measure of her esteem.
